What Audhio Does

Audhio is a Chrome extension that reads web pages, PDFs and Google Docs aloud, highlighting each word as it is spoken. This policy covers the extension and the audhio.com website. It explains what data Audhio uses, where it goes, and how long it is kept.

Text Audhio Reads

To be ready the moment you press Play, Audhio reads the text of the page you are on, on your own device. No text leaves your device until you press Play.

  • Web pages: the text of the page you are reading.
  • PDFs: the PDF opens in Audhio's own viewer. The file stays on your computer. Only its text is used.
  • Google Docs: Audhio loads the Doc's text from Google, using the Google account you are already signed in to, so it can read the whole Doc. This happens on your device.

When you press Play, the text to be read is sent to our server to make the audio. Audhio does not read text on sites it is turned off for (see Excluded Sites below).

How the Audio Is Made

Our server runs on Cloudflare. It first checks whether audio for that exact text and voice already exists. If not, it sends the text to ElevenLabs, our text-to-speech provider, to make the audio, then keeps a copy so the same text plays instantly next time.

Saved audio is looked up by a fingerprint of the text (a hash). It is not linked to you, your browser or your account. The same text from anyone uses the same saved copy.

What We Store

On our servers:

  • Saved audio, and the text it was made from, so it can be found again. Deleted automatically after 90 days.
  • Your account: your name and email address from Google, your Google account ID, and your Audhio user ID.
  • Your plan: free, Pro, or Audhio Access, and your subscription status from Stripe.
  • How much you have listened this month, to count the free 30 minutes.
  • If you uninstall Audhio, the date you did. If you also choose to tell us why, your answer.

On your device:

  • That you are signed in, and your Audhio user ID
  • Your settings, such as voice, speed and whether PDFs open in Audhio

Usage Analytics

To find out what works and what breaks, the extension sends us short usage events, such as when reading starts, finishes or fails, or when you change the voice, close the player, sign in or press Upgrade. These can be sent from a page even if you never press Play there. Each event can include:

  • The address of the page you were on, without anything after a "?" or "#"
  • The voice and speed you chose, and how long the text was
  • Your Audhio user ID
  • Your IP address, and the rough location it points to, such as your city

Events never include the text you read. They go through our own server to PostHog, our analytics provider. We do not record your screen. We do not track clicks on the pages you read. We only count clicks on Audhio's own buttons, such as Upgrade.

The audhio.com website also uses PostHog. It records which pages are visited and clicks on a few buttons, such as Upgrade, with your IP address and rough location. If you came to the website from the extension, these are linked to your Audhio user ID. No advertising trackers are used, and we do not show ads.

Accounts

Audhio requires a Google account. You sign in on first use with Google. We use your email address to run your account: your subscription, support, and emails about Audhio, such as new features. We send those emails through Loops. You can unsubscribe from product emails at any time.

Payments

Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store them. We keep your subscription status and the email it is under.

Third-Party Services

  • Cloudflare: runs our server and stores saved audio and account data
  • ElevenLabs: turns text into speech
  • Google: sign-in
  • Stripe: payments
  • Loops: email
  • PostHog: usage analytics

Each gets only what it needs for that job. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.

Data Retention

Saved text and audio are deleted automatically after 90 days, however often they are played. Account and plan details are kept while you have an account. Settings on your device stay until you uninstall Audhio or clear your browser data.

To have your account and its data deleted, email privacy@audhio.com.

Permissions Explained

  • Storage: to keep your sign-in and settings on your device
  • Identity: to sign in with your Google account
  • Tabs: to show the player on the tab you are on, and to open PDFs in Audhio's viewer
  • Access to the sites you visit: to read a page's text and highlight it as it is read. Audhio does nothing on a page until you open the player or press Play, apart from getting the text ready on your device.

Excluded Sites

Audhio is turned off on video and music sites (YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Disney+ and others).

Children's Privacy

Audhio does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

If we make important changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Audhio after a change means you accept it.
